EYS Updated Proposal
After meeting with Lorenzo the other day to discuss the end of year show, it was suggested that having physical packaging may not be the best idea. The reason for this is for
- it would have to be absolutely perfectly crafted
- the risk of people picking it up, damage/breakage
- it might look a bit lost as its only small
I completely agree with this and figured photography would be a better way to show my work:

The brief I wish to have in the show isn't anywhere near complete at this moment in time which is why the above shows mock ups and very bad photography!

Updated Portfolio
After todays crit I have updated my portfolio again. Although I had changed my font size since my portfolio surgery with Ric Bell (where he mentioned the type should be smaller), it was mentioned today that it could be made slightly smaller still.
I have also changed the typeface to match that used on my business card to keep everything consistent.
I have created a front page similar to what I have used on my business card also:

I still need to add more projects to my site which I will be doing over this week before we meet again in our PPD groups on monday.
I'm also thinking I might change the thumbnails on my homepage to be black and white and the once you click on them you get to see the projects in colour.
This is just to keep the colour scheme consistent on my homepage.

Portfolio Surgery with Ric Bell
I had a portfolio surgery today with Ric Bell. I feel that it was quite successful and got some good feedback from him. We went through my PDF as shown in the post below and also my Cargo website. (cargocollective.com/cwarrengraphicdesign)
Here is some of the feedback and points mentioned:
- I was concerned that sometimes the photography of my final products let the work down slightly, Ric reassured me that it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had a variety of shots showing my work from different angles and all my photographs tell a story of my projects as I had put things into context.
He gave me a few tips that you don't actually need a professional set up to photograph your work well. The majority of the time work looks best photographed on grey as white can sometimes give a yellow effect. He also mentioned a tripod is good thing to use.
- We talked about some of my work from first and second year which I feel looking back at doesn't look half as good now. He gave me a few ideas of re-visiting these projects (good sleep project and time to cook) and a few little things I could easily tweak to make these look better.
I was advised not to take these projects out my portfolio but to keep them towards the back and have my best work at the front.
- Ric's advice on finding placements was rather than send out 20 emails, send out 200. He also suggested I could contact in house design teams at places such as Marks and Spencer.
- I didn't have any of my portfolio sheets printed out at this time but Ric mentioned the type didn't need to be as big, so this is something I will be changing as soon as possible. He also mentioned I should consider my portfolio as spreads rather than just individual sheets, he said the layout of a portfolio is an element in itself.
- I mentioned that some of my projects in there actually have a lot more work to them but I had only picked out the very minimum. The advice for this was that depending on the size of the brief, it's fine to have two or three pages if need be. If there is a project i'm not so happy with then just keep this down to one page.
- Whilst looking at my work, Ric pointed out elements in a few of my project which he said he would like to be able to see in more detail. Examples are the logos I had created for 'chop chop' and for the M&S Perfect Picnic. He said I could have logos featured by themselves on a spread as it's good to see a mixture of artwork and photographs. Ric mentioned the artwork for the M&S labels would work as a feature alone too.
With this advice I am definitely going to expand my Chop Chop brief and M&S both into two spreads as I feel what I currently have doesn't show enough. I will add my logos and also some artwork as part of this also. I will be addressing the issue with the type and I also want to work on designing a new cover.

Updated Portfolio
I've added my four recent briefs from last module to my portfolio ready for the portfolio surgeries this week. I've taken off the front and back cover for now as I want to redesign it. I really would like to alter the layout slightly but for now I want to see what feedback I can get on my work and then alter my portfolio again after this.
